We are immensely proud to announce the completion of one of our most prestigious projects to date: the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi. Following its grand opening on 22 November 2025, visitors can now experience a breathtaking journey through the history of our universe, enhanced by a bespoke lighting scheme designed entirely by BOLD.
Located in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum is not merely a building but a testament to the Earth’s 13.8-billion-year narrative. BOLD was commissioned to design the lighting for all internal galleries, a task that required a delicate balance between technical precision and atmospheric storytelling.
Our lighting design serves as the invisible thread that guides visitors through time. From the dawn of the cosmos to the intricate ecosystems of the future, every light source and ambient glow was meticulously planned to:
- Protect and Preserve: Utilising state-of-the-art LED technology to ensure the conservation of rare specimens, including the world-renowned ‘Stan’ the T-Rex.
- Enhance Narrative: Beyond mere visibility, our design creates a theatrical atmosphere that breathes life into the exhibits. By sculpting with light and shadow, we emphasize the architectural grandeur of the ‘Urban Wadi’ while drawing the eye to the intricate details of Earth’s history, turning a visit into a profound, cinematic journey through time.
- Integrate Seamlessly: Working in harmony with the museum’s organic, rock-inspired architecture to ensure the lighting feels like a natural extension of the space.
The museum is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture, spanning an impressive 35,000 square metres. Designed to resemble natural rock formations, the structure echoes the “Urban Wadi” concept, where geometry and nature converge.
Our lighting team was tasked with illuminating a vast array of spaces, including:
- The Main Atrium: Housing five towering 75-foot sauropods.
- The Story of Earth & The Evolving World: Permanent galleries where light narrates 13.8 billion years of history.
- The Research Facilities: Including the Palaeo Lab and Life Sciences Lab, where precision lighting supports ongoing scientific discovery.
The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is more than a museum; it is a journey through time, and BOLD is proud to have provided the light by which this story is told.
