4 October 2024 to 26 January 2025
Stadsarchief Amsterdam
From 4 October 2024, the Amsterdam City Archives presents the new exhibition All Those Amsterdam People… Photos 1970–1990. This photo exhibition offers a unique view of a turbulent twenty-year period during which the city of Amsterdam experienced radical changes.
The exhibition picks up where the earlier exhibition All Those Amsterdam People… Photos 1935-1970 left off. The 1970s and 1980s were marked by urban renewal, the construction of metro lines, a deep economic crisis and high unemployment. More residents left the city than ever before in its history. Numerous families exchanged impoverished houses for homes in nearby towns, such as Zaanstad and Purmerend. However, the city still increased in size: it expanded with the completion of the Bijlmermeer area and the arrival of new Amsterdammers as a result of labour migration, family reunification and post-colonial migration. By the late 1980s, the contours of Amsterdam as a financial centre were emerging, and it became a location attractive to start-ups and investors.
Bastard Orange Lighting Design created the lighting design for the exhibition.
